The story of May…

I can’t believe it’s been almost 3 weeks since my last blog. I’m shocked and appalled at myself…well not really, but I felt I should show some contrition…don’t ask me why. I think my mother may have managed to pass on her Catholic guilt without passing on the actual Catholic bit. No idea how she did it…either that or it’s genetic, but while I debate whether guilt is nature or nurture with myself I have managed to get off topic before I’ve even started. I’m not sure how that happens but it sure is a challenge. I’m always torn between the need to blog more often as it clarifies my thoughts and ideas and makes me focus on one topic while on the other hand I have so many thoughts and ideas flying around in my head that sometime focusing on one feels like I’m throwing away the rest.

I had this discussion with a friend of mine recently about what do you do with all these ideas…I’m not saying they’re all good ideas…and we came to no specific conclusion. What we did decide was that to actually see an idea through to the end, successfully. You have to focus in and get all the tiny details right and that’s basically what I’ve been doing for the last few weeks and now there is a bit of a lull my brain has gone into overdrive on how I should do this that and the next thing. It’s exciting but I need to bring it back to some of the fine details.

So two paragraphs in and I am finally getting round to what I was going to say when I sat down to write the blog in the first place. The month started with a great maternity shoot with the lovely Angelique and Jack. I’ll be seeing them again in the next couple of weeks to do the newborn shoot…I should clarify Jack is her first son, dad, as usual was in hiding. They were great fun. You can see a few of my favourite shots from their shoot in the gallery at the end of the post.

Then I got to do a follow up that shoot with a lovely wee man that I hadn’t seen for almost six month. Benjamin was having a bit of a bad day, so his mum and dad were working hard to help the photographer to get him to smile…my favourite shot of the day isn’t the best technical shot but I was laughing at the time and I still smile when I see it now. What do you think?

His mum is a spectacular dancer!

Then to follow up the very next day I had the Heriot-Watt University Sports Awards dinner….I remember these events from my distant past and was a little apprehensive at the thought of taking some expensive kit to such an occasion, but it turned out I had nothing to worry about as it was a world away from what I remembered.

To be honest it was quite inspiring. Heriot-Watt Sports Union, though the vision of one guy, dedication, co-operation and an awful lot of hard work by countless others have built a really amazing community that doesn’t just embrace sport, it promotes it, it celebrates it, it supports it and I for one felt privileged to be involved in the ceremony where they gave credit to all those involved, not just the star athletes but those that put in the time to promote their sports and university. You can see some of the stars of the show in the gallery at the end of the post. I’m saying nothing about the mix up with the room and being stuck in somewhere half the size of the one I reckied and the biggest group increasing to an eye watering 38 people, but I managed…I did have to employ teacher voice at times, but hey what ever it takes to get the job done!

So where did I go then? Well that was followed by 2 days at the Dream Weddings Scotland Show at the Sheraton, which looks gorgeous by the way. I met a lot of really great people, which really deserve a blog post all of their own, but unfortunately I suspect that will have to be dropped in favour of more commercial topics. Real leads may have been a bit thin on the ground but I learned a lot and as they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger…hahaha I did have a wonderful sofa and I would recommend that as a set up to any event as it worked a treat for getting people to sit down and talk to me.

So add in a half dozen meetings and you have my May so far…I have another commercial shoot tomorrow on Queen Street in Edinburgh, so I better go and do a kit check, as it is a bit of an early start. Apologies for condensing 4 posts into 1. I’ll try and do better in the future. Enjoy the pictures…next post is going to be on technology, specifically the new iPad and Photography Contract Maker, if my ludite brain can work out how to get it sorted out ūüėČ Take care x
